Cirrus clouds are the highest clouds we see in the sky, usually thin wispy strands that may look like feathers, hairs or cotton candy. Cirrus have a pure white color since they are always ice crystals due to their high altitude. It can be fun to learn to recognize the shapes and appearances of the three main cloud families: cirrus, cumulus and stratus. All clouds develop from water vapor that cools within rising air. Collecting on dust and other cloud seeds, water forms into droplets and ice crystals. Clouds appear white since the droplets scatter all wavelengths of sunlight roughly equally. The temperature, wind and moisture determine the size, shape and type of clouds.  Cirrus clouds usually indicate good weather since according to folk wisdom: “the higher the clouds, the better the weather.”

Cloud names are combined to describe specific types. For example, cirrocumulus are white patches of high clouds with lumps called cloudlets and cirrostratus are very thin and high often appearing as a halo around the sun or moon. Clouds are wonderful and important. Enjoy their beauty and don’t think too intensely about them. Clouds don’t overthink, they just drift.
