Sunshine is wonderful and has made life on Earth possible. The beautiful light from the sun takes 8 minutes to reach us, fast considering the sun is 93 million miles away. This is just the right distance for us all to exist. The sun shines because inside its multi-million degree core, hydrogen atoms are fused into helium atoms. The resulting energy radiates into space as light and heat.
It is common and ever-present, yet sunshine can create extraordinary sky phenomena. If you are lucky, you might see a rainbow, or mesmerizing visual effects such as sun dogs, light pillars and halos. Of course, never look directly at the sun. Atmospheric halos are arcs around the sun caused by light passing through ice crystals. Sun dogs are colorful splotches of light on the sides of the sun due to ice crystals in clouds. Sun pillars are light columns appearing to shoot above and below the sun. These emerge when sunlight reflects off ice crystals during sunrise and sunset. Thankfully, the sun is massive enough to keep shining for another 5 billion years.
